Increase Discovery Calls by 35%

If you’re on my email list, or have networked with me on social media, you’ve probably learned I like to share awesome resources that have massively helped my business.  Today, I’m gonna share a Ninja trick I use every day in my business that gets me eight discovery calls per week, on average.

My freelance career began a few years ago.  And in that time I’ve had three different web designs, two logo/branding variations, and up until five months ago… ZERO business plan.  Now, I still wouldn’t say my business plan is complete.  I mean, let’s face it… client work comes first and mine always gets put last.  But I implement as much as I can when I have the time.  So let’s just say, it’s an awesome work in progress, mmmmkay?

One of the most recent tweaks I have made to my plan is this: EVERY. SINGLE. SERVICE. on my site has a button to a 17hats questionnaire that is redirected to an Acuity Scheduling link.

Sounds too easy, right?

It is. But…

Simple is best.

And in this case, it couldn’t be more spot on.  You see, the questionnaire gets enough pre-project information and is laid out in a way that the potential client knows I know what I’m talking about.  They get the impression I’m professional and capable.  And they get a beginning taste of what the process of working with me will be like.  It’s all part of the Disneyland customer experience you SHOULD be giving to all your potential clients and current clients on a day to day basis.

PLUS, when they submit the questionnaire they go DIRECTLY to an Acuity Scheduling booking page… it’s all just laid out for them.  They don’t have to find a contact button, an email address, there’s no other step they have to chase down to get attention, it goes directly to me.  I lead them right to my door effortlessly. AND they give me what I need to start a conversation about their project.

I went from booking 1-3 calls per week with just my regular efforts using a standard Contact Form 7 on one page of my site, and some 17hats questionnaire forms sprinkled throughout my site, then emailing a scheduling link AFTER some emails had gone back and forth….  To booking 5-8 discovery calls per week AUTOMATICALLY with no effort from me at all.

I’ve booked more, converted more, spent less admin time to get them, and the customer experience is off the chain!

BOOM!  See what I mean?!?

So what are you waiting for? Go. Implement. See for yourself how the big girls like to play freelancer.

Great post April! I use all of these tools and they make my work so effortless like you say! I get compliments from my clients and I have had some ask me to onboard their business with these tools too. I created an business onboarding package that integrates their business with 7Hats, Acuity, Asana or Trello.

Thanks, Chido! It really makes a huge difference. I’ve had two clients ask me to set them up with this same system once they’ve seen it in action. I’ve even had a few web design clients ask for it as well, too. 🙂

Very cool! And timely, because I’m looking for a call scheduling tool. 🙂

Awesome! I love Acuity. It also integrates with the Facebook pixel for funnels 🙂 AND it integrates with my email provider, ConvertKit. Plus, if you don’t have an invoicing system or shopping cart yet, you can also take payments through them. All in all it’s a huge bang for your $10!

Hi April! Your post has given me so many ideas on how to better streamline my systems. THANK YOU!!
Do you sometimes have people fill out the questionnaire and then NOT schedule the call? OR, do you find that some fill out the questionnaire just to get you on a call…but they’re really not serious about working with you (yet) or – despite the questionnaire – they’re still just in the “thinking about it” phase?

I love your process…but I’m concerned about people scheduling a call a little too soon, too easily. Hope that makes sense!

So far I’ve not had any issues with people filling out the form and not scheduling a call, like… ever. Seriously. My form is long enough that it weeds out the people that aren’t serious but not so long that I’m scaring everyone off 🙂 I close really well on the phone. And I make my services pretty clear on my site. So when they fill out that form, they know a decent enough about me and what I offer. So I also wouldn’t say it’s scheduling a call too soon either. Once they talk to me, I reinforce the vibe they get from my site and gain their trust.
